What is a vacuum pump separator, and what does it do?

A vacuum pump separator is an important component of many oil-lubricated vacuum pumps. The purpose of the separator is to separate oil and oil mist from the air leaving the vacuum pump.

When an oil-lubricated vacuum pump is operating, fine oil droplets can form in the pump’s exhaust air. A vacuum pump separator captures these oil particles, reducing the amount of oil mist discharged from the pump.

In many vacuum pumps, the collected oil can be returned to the pump’s oil system. This means that the separator helps both to reduce oil emissions and to make more efficient use of the pump oil.

How does a vacuum pump separator work?

A vacuum pump separator essentially works as a filter for the air leaving the vacuum pump.

The oil-containing exhaust air passes through the separator’s filter media. The fine oil particles are retained, while the filtered air continues out of the pump.

The collected oil droplets accumulate in the separator and, depending on the design of the vacuum pump, can be returned to the pump.

The separator’s filter media and design are therefore crucial to how effectively oil mist is separated and how much resistance is created as air passes through the filter.

Why is a vacuum pump separator important?

A properly functioning vacuum pump separator performs several important functions in a vacuum system.

It can, among other things:

  • reduce the discharge of oil mist
  • contribute to a cleaner working environment around the vacuum pump
  • reduce oil loss from the pump
  • ensure appropriate airflow through the pump exhaust
  • contribute to stable vacuum pump operation
  • help maintain the proper function of the pump’s exhaust system

The separator is therefore a wear component that can become loaded over time and eventually needs to be replaced.

What happens when a vacuum pump separator becomes clogged?

During normal operation, the separator collects oil particles from the pump’s exhaust air. Over time, the filter media can therefore become saturated or clogged.

When the resistance through the separator becomes too high, it can affect the operation of the vacuum pump. Increased back pressure can, among other things, result in a higher load and increased operating temperature.

Signs of a loaded separator can vary depending on the type of vacuum pump and the installation. Changes in pump operation, increased oil consumption or visible oil mist at the exhaust can indicate that the separator should be inspected.

It is therefore important to follow the recommendations for the specific vacuum pump and replace the separator when necessary.

How often should a vacuum pump separator be replaced?

There is no single replacement interval that applies to all vacuum pumps.

The service life depends on several factors, including:

  • the pump’s operating hours
  • the size and design of the pump
  • the operating temperature
  • the load on the vacuum system
  • the type of process the pump is used for
  • the amount of oil mist generated
  • the separator’s filter media and design

If the vacuum pump operates for many hours a day or under demanding conditions, the separator may need to be replaced more frequently.

Regular inspection and maintenance can therefore help ensure that the vacuum pump continues to operate as expected.

Choosing a vacuum pump separator

It is important to choose a separator that is suitable for the specific vacuum pump.

Vacuum pump separators are available in different sizes, designs and with different connections. Therefore, the pump manufacturer and model are often required when identifying the correct filter element.

At EKO-Filters, we offer alternative vacuum pump separators for a wide range of vacuum pumps and pump models.

Our products are not original spare parts from the manufacturers mentioned, but alternative filter elements designed for the corresponding vacuum pumps.

Alternative vacuum pump separators

EKO-Filters offers alternative vacuum pump separators for vacuum pumps from manufacturers such as:

  • Becker
  • Busch
  • DVP
  • Edwards
  • Leybold
  • PVR
  • Rietschle
  • Tepro

Manufacturer names and model designations are used to identify which vacuum pumps the individual alternative filter elements are designed for.

EKO-Filters is not a manufacturer of the vacuum pumps mentioned, and our filter elements are not original spare parts from these manufacturers.

Not sure which filter you need?

Finding the correct filter based on the pump manufacturer alone can be difficult.

If you are unsure which vacuum pump separator is suitable for your pump, you are welcome to contact us.

We recommend providing as much information as possible about the pump, for example:

  • manufacturer
  • model
  • type designation
  • any spare part number on the existing filter
  • dimensions of the existing filter

The more information we have, the easier it is to identify the correct alternative filter element.

Original or alternative vacuum pump separator – what is the difference?

An original spare part is a filter element supplied by the original manufacturer of the vacuum pump or its spare parts organization.

An alternative filter element is manufactured by a different company and offered as an alternative to the original filter.

Alternative filter elements can be relevant if you are looking for an alternative to the original spare part. However, it is always important to check that the selected filter element is suitable for the specific vacuum pump and its application.

At EKO-Filters, we focus on alternative filter elements for vacuum pumps, helping you find a suitable alternative to the original spare part.

A vacuum pump separator is used to separate oil mist from the exhaust air of an oil-lubricated vacuum pump.

The separator captures the oil particles, reducing the amount of oil mist discharged from the pump. In many systems, the collected oil can be returned to the pump’s oil system.
