Filter Installation and Replacement
Follow this guide to ensure that the filter element is installed and replaced correctly. Proper installation is essential for optimal filtration, reliable operation and a long service life of the system.
Before you begin
Before installing or replacing the filter element:
- Switch off the equipment or system.
- Disconnect the power supply, if applicable.
- Shut off any liquid, air or gas supply to the filter.
- Relieve the pressure in the system if the filter is pressurised.
- Make sure that the work area is clean and safe.
- Check that the new filter element is the correct type and size.

Replacing the filter element
1. Remove the old filter
Open the filter housing or filter vessel according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Carefully remove the old filter element.
At the same time, inspect the filter housing for dirt, damage or signs of wear.
2. Clean the filter housing
Clean the filter housing and sealing surfaces to remove dirt, dust and any residue from the old filter.
Use a suitable cleaning agent and cleaning method that are compatible with the filter material and the system.
3. Inspect the new filter
Check the new filter element for visible damage before installation.
Compare it with the old filter and check, among other things:
- Filter type
- Dimensions
- Connections
- Gaskets and sealing surfaces
- Flow direction, if indicated

Never install a damaged or incorrect filter element.
4. Install the filter element
Position the new filter element correctly in the filter housing.
Make sure that the filter is properly aligned and positioned against the relevant sealing surfaces. If the filter has a specified flow direction, make sure it is installed accordingly.
Do not force the filter element into position.
5. Check gaskets and seals
Check that O-rings, gaskets and other sealing elements are correctly positioned and free from damage.
Replace damaged or worn seals as necessary.
6. Close the filter housing
Reinstall the filter housing and tighten it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Avoid overtightening, as this may damage the filter housing, gasket or threads.
7. Start up the system
Slowly reopen the supply and start the system.
Check the filter housing and connections for leaks, unusual noises or other signs of incorrect installation.
If the system has a pressure or filter indicator, check it after start-up.
After replacement
Once the new filter element has been installed:
- Check that the system is operating normally.
- Check for any leaks.
- Reset or record the filter indicator, if the system has this function.
- Record the date of the filter replacement.
- Dispose of the used filter in accordance with applicable regulations and local requirements.
When should the filter be replaced?
The service life of a filter element depends, among other things, on operating time, load, medium and operating conditions. The filter element should be replaced according to the manufacturer’s recommended replacement interval, or earlier if its filtration capacity has been reduced.
Signs that the filter element may need to be replaced can include:
- Increased pressure drop across the filter
- Reduced air, liquid or gas flow
- A visibly dirty or damaged filter
- An alarm or filter indicator
- Changes in the performance of the connected equipment
Correct installation and regular replacement of the filter element ensure optimal filtration and contribute to stable, reliable and safe operation.
