Hankison HMD and HMM membrane dryers
Hankison HMD and HMM are compact membrane dryers for compressed air where lower humidity and a controlled pressure dew point are required. The series are used for point-of-use installations, instrument air, pneumatic systems, process equipment and other applications where dry compressed air is important.

Hankison HMD – compact drying close to the point of use
The Hankison HMD series is designed as a compact solution for small and medium airflows. The series is well suited for installation directly on or close to the equipment where dry compressed air is required.
HMD dryers require no electrical connection and can be installed in different positions. This makes them flexible when the dryer needs to be integrated into existing machinery or local compressed air installations.
Typical applications include:
- Pneumatic valves and components
- Instrument air
- Measurement and analytical equipment
- Process equipment
- Outdoor installations
- Frost-sensitive pneumatic systems
- Laboratory equipment
- Local production machinery
- Applications where only part of the compressed air needs to be dried
The HMD series covers airflows from approximately 2.6 to 112.8 m³/h, depending on the model.
HMD models
| Model | Airflow | Connection |
|---|---|---|
| HMD 20-1 | 2.6 m³/h | 3/8″ |
| HMD 20-2 | 10.1 m³/h | 3/8″ |
| HMD 20-3 | 16.1 m³/h | 3/8″ |
| HMD 20-4 | 34.8 m³/h | 1/2″ |
| HMD 20-5 | 57.9 m³/h | 1/2″ |
| HMD 20-6 | 112.8 m³/h | 3/4″ |
The stated airflows are nominal values. Actual performance depends on factors such as pressure, temperature and the required pressure dew point.
The HMD series can be configured for different dew point levels, and Hankison specifies a range from approximately +10 °C to -40 °C, depending on operating conditions and configuration.
Hankison HMM – modular membrane drying
The Hankison HMM series is a modular membrane dryer designed for continuous airflow. The series is intended for installations where there is a continuous need for dry compressed air, and it covers a larger capacity range than the HMD series.
The HMM series covers airflows from approximately 2.4 to 240 m³/h.
It can be used for applications including:
- Instrument and control air
- Outdoor pneumatic installations
- Process equipment
- Laboratory equipment
- Measurement and analytical equipment
- Production machinery
- Local point-of-use installations
- Installations without access to electrical power
The HMM is designed as a compact, modular solution with low pressure drop and the flexibility to accommodate different airflows.
HMM models
| Model | Airflow | Connection |
|---|---|---|
| HMM 1-3 | 2.4 m³/h | 3/8″ |
| HMM 2-3 | 8 m³/h | 3/8″ |
| HMM 3-4 | 17 m³/h | 1/2″ |
| HMM 4-4 | 23 m³/h | 1/2″ |
| HMM 5-6 | 43 m³/h | 3/4″ |
| HMM 6-6 | 71 m³/h | 3/4″ |
| HMM 7-8 | 117 m³/h | 1″ |
| HMM 8-16 | 185 m³/h | 1″ |
| HMM 9-16 | 242 m³/h | 1″ |
The specific airflow must always be assessed in relation to the actual operating conditions and the required dew point. Hankison’s official documentation specifies the HMM series for up to 240 m³/h.
HMD or HMM?
HMD and HMM fundamentally perform the same function, but they are designed to meet different installation requirements.
| HMD | HMM | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical application | Local point-of-use | Continuous airflow |
| Airflow | Approx. 2.6–112.8 m³/h | Approx. 2.4–240 m³/h |
| Design | Compact | Modular |
| Electrical connection | No | No |
| Moving parts | No | No |
| Typical location | At the point of use | Process or industrial system |
Hankison describes the HMD as a flexible and compact solution, while the HMM series is designed for continuous airflow and higher capacities.
However, airflow is not the only factor that determines the choice. Operating pressure, inlet temperature, required dew point and air quality requirements should also be taken into account when sizing the dryer.
Low maintenance requirements
An important advantage of Hankison HMD and HMM dryers is their simple design.
The dryers do not require an electrical power supply for the drying process itself and have no traditional moving parts. This reduces the need for ongoing service of the dryer itself.
However, adequate filtration upstream of the membrane dryer remains important.
Filtration is an important part of the installation
To protect the membrane, the compressed air must be adequately filtered before entering the dryer.
Hankison highlights the importance of removing:
- Liquid water
- Oil
- Dust
- Rust
- Pipe particles and other contaminants
The required filtration depends on the quality of the installation and the desired air quality.
A typical setup may be:
Compressor → aftercooler/water separator → pre-filter → membrane dryer → optional after-filter → point of use
The specific filtration solution should be adapted to the individual installation.
Where are Hankison membrane dryers used?
HMD and HMM dryers can be useful in installations where it is not necessary to dry the entire compressed air system.
For example, if a single machine or process requires dry air, the membrane dryer can be installed locally.
This can be beneficial for:
- Frost-sensitive installations
- Outdoor pneumatics
- Instrumentation
- Process equipment
- Analytical equipment
- Measurement equipment
- Specialised production processes
This allows the dry air to be targeted specifically at the point where it is most needed.
Should you choose HMD or HMM?
If you are unsure which series is suitable for your installation, the key factors to consider are airflow, operating pressure, temperature and the required dew point.
